Artificial intelligence will prevent suicide for children

The AI-powered software is designed to protect youngsters from dangerous social media information.

St. Petersburg reportedly has developed a software package to help keep children safe on the Internet using artificial intelligence technologies. A neural network is used to look for content with suicidal and depressive overtones on social networks, as well as groups which advocate death or teenagers with suicidal tendencies.

This city government-funded comprehensive programme, known as "Protecting the Future," was created by the city government and the Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights (OPSCCR) together with the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI). It consists of monitoring, analysis, and identifying negative impacts of the digital environment on young people. Additionally, an artificial intelligence programme is used to identify content containing suicidal and depressive thoughts.

Nadezhda Korotovskikh, the head of the St. Petersburg strategic initiatives office, felt that the project was very valuable. According to Russian data, suicide is the third leading cause of death for Russian minors. However, at the same time, there is a rising trend of crimes against children on the Internet being actively displaced. as a result, it is crucial that information security issues be taken seriously. "In addition, a nationwide solution must be created because young children in St. Petersburg aren't the only ones in need of assistance: 'St. Petersburg is ready to assume full responsibility for producing a working model that can provide assistance to children in life-threatening situations.'"

It is anticipated that the programme will be put through preliminary testing in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region in order to allow for future application across the entire Russian Federation.
