The department cautioned that the hacking could result in the release of some personal information.
In early August, the website France-visas, which is used to submit visa application to France, was hacked. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this on Friday evening.
According to the department, the France-visas portal's functionality was quickly restored. However, it has been clarified that some of the personal data taken may have been stolen by hackers.
“On August 10, 2021, a cyber attack was launched against the France-visas platform module, which was quickly countered. However, the personal data collected during the visa application (email addresses and identity numbers) could have been stolen, according to a statement released by the French Foreign Office.
These details were purportedly shared with the French National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms (CNIL). A government complaint has also been lodged, and a judicial probe is underway.
